The other evening I was at the life drawing group when Csaba sidled up to me in that polite way that he has and said that he had a great idea for promoting the work of people who go along to the group and giving them more exposure (his words). So being the kind of person who never knowingly volunteers for anything I guardedly asked him exactly what he meant. I think I wasn’t the first person he asked but rather the first person to say yes and in so doing swiftly broke the habit of a lifetime, so anyway he wants me to tell you a bit more about myself and my painting so here goes…..
Like most of us who do this I have been drawing on and off since a child, it was just in my case that life got in the way and I didn’t seriously devote any real time to the subject until about ten years ago when I turned 50 and my wife became seriously ill. I needed a way to be near her when she needed me but still able to escape to somewhere else when I needed to.
Pencil came first then watercolour, then tentative use of oil and finally acrylic, which I hated, it dried too fast and along with my poorly developed skills showed little promise, but I persevered and finally got the acrylic paint to work more the way I wanted, I am still very much trying to improve and I know I still have a long way to go.
You will have noticed all of the pictures are acrylic portraits and all 17″ x 24″, I am using a limited palette of 2 blues a red and a white for simplicity. I love to paint and draw the human face and body, it represents to me one of the greatest challenges in painting and besides if you’re going to make the effort it might as well be for something worthwhile don’t you think.
As I mentioned earlier I started to paint because it created a welcome release and as a result, I have never actually sold a painting, so I just keep trying to get better and then put them away.
I hope you enjoy looking at my pictures they have given me a lot of pleasure in their creation.
