Description:
Embark on a journey through the works of five iconic artists: Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Albrecht Dürer, and Peter Paul Rubens. Over five weeks, we’ll explore their approaches to figure drawing, focusing on 3–4 selected artworks from each master. This course offers a unique opportunity to study their techniques, deepen your understanding of anatomy, and develop your line quality and rendering skills.

Rather than striving for exact replicas, participants will create their own interpretations, inspired by these timeless works. Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate student, or simply an admirer of classical art, this course offers an inspiring journey in drawing.

Oil Painting Course: Caravaggio Figure Painting Study

Description:
Step into the dramatic world of Caravaggio as we study his revolutionary approach to figure painting. In this five-week course, we’ll focus on replicating one of his masterful figures, using a limited palette of four colours. The emphasis is on the figure rather than a whole painting.

Participants will work on oil paper, starting with a precise drawing before layering and building the painting through careful and methodical techniques. This course is ideal for beginners and intermediate artists looking to refine their skills in classical oil painting and develop patience and precision in their work.

  • A3 oil paper.

  • Oil paints: Ivory Black, Cadmium Red, Yellow Ochre, Ultramarine Blue.

  • Mediums: Odorless spirit, linseed oil.

  • Brushes: A selection of round and flat brushes (both hog and synthetic).

  • Paper tissue or a rag for brush cleaning.

Life Drawing, Basic Anatomy - II.

Life Drawing Course Overview

The course is tailored for students seeking not only to enhance their drawing abilities but also to deepen their understanding of human anatomy from life. This program provides a platform to refine and augment their artistic development. It offers an excellent opportunity to delve into human anatomy, still with short poses serving as an ideal starting point. Building upon the foundational skeletal landmarks covered in the initial course, we now progress to studying musculature, focusing on the primary and universal muscle structures. As always we will apply this to the live model.

Over the span of five weeks, participants will delve into the intricacies of 12-13 major muscle groups. Utilizing a life-sized skeleton as a reference, we will explore the appearance, function, origin, and insertion of each group in detail, going beyond mere identification. Optional homework assignments are offered for individuals committed to advancing their skills throughout the course. Additionally, at the conclusion of each session, students will be provided with printed materials summarizing the content covered in the lesson.

III. Life Drawing, Rendering

Life Drawing Course Overview

This course is designed for individuals who can accurately outline a figure from life, possess a basic skill set in handling art materials like graphite and charcoal pencils. Completion of the level one life-drawing course is recommended as a prerequisite.

It serves as a natural progression, where participants can apply and further develop the knowledge acquired in the earlier course. The course naturally builds upon the foundational knowledge gained in the earlier course, offering participants an opportunity to apply and advance their skills.

Course Highlights

During this five-week program, participants will explore advanced techniques in life drawing, with a specific focus on mastering the proportions of hands and feet. Emphasis will also be placed on understanding light dynamics and basic value systems, along with crucial rendering techniques. The sessions are thoughtfully structured to facilitate progression, starting with one-hour drawings and gradually advancing to more intricate two-hour sessions. The course culminates in a comprehensive 3 to 3.5-hour drawing session, allowing participants to apply and refine their newfound skill.

Rather than revisiting basics like gesture, pencil handling and the value system of light (covered in the level one course), this course builds upon that foundation. The emphasis shifts towards rendering and unveiling the surface anatomy of the figure

Life Drawing, Form from the beginning - I.

Life Drawing Course Overview

The course is suitable for students who are looking to improve their drawing skills from life, this program offers an opportunity to refine and enhance their progress. Gesture drawing is a great way to learn about human anatomy, and short poses are the perfect place to start. We progress by rendering forms with longer poses. This course will include a nude model and is for adults 18+

It serves as a natural progression, where participants can apply and further develop the knowledge acquired earlier.

Starting with a simple gesture, we can gradually develop it into a detailed sketch of a human being, showcasing our artistic skills and creativity. It is crucial to emphasize the importance of line quality. The subsequent stage will involve concentrating on identifying and analyzing the fundamental "anatomical landmarks" present in the human body. A. Optional homework assignments are available for those who are serious about making progress in the course. At the end of each class, students will receive printed materials covering the content of each lesson.
